Denis Peterson suggested I'd buy the ebook on artpapa.com, for a nice tutorial on how to paint realistic skin tones.
*Thanks heaps for the help!!*
So, here's attempt number 4.
Attempt 1-3 resulted in everything neatly being gesso'd over again.

1. scetch (used a grid)
2. yellow ochre mix and part of first raw umber layer
3. second raw umber layer finished
4. second dead layer finished.
I think it's supposed to look like this (at least I hope it is, since then there's still a chance that I'm doing something right and this WILL result in a decent looking skin tone )

I love working in layers like this!
And I really love that it's acrylic so I don't have to wait 4 weeks for 1 layer to dry. The downside is that I hardly have time to blend things so there are some hard edges still.
I've got to remember to toss in the retarder for the next few layers!

the next one will be the first color layer - wish me luck!!!
